Oswego’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will hold a Dinner Dance at SUNY Oswego’s Hewitt Union Ballroom, Sunday, from 5-9 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m., and music will begin at 6 p.m.
The Nick Sterio Orchestra, the longest continuously playing big band in Oswego, will present their authentic 1940s-style big band music, under the leadership of Nick Sterio.
“We’re looking forward to bringing some wonderful sounds and very talented band members to the SUNY Campus on April 20,” Sterio said. “Our band has been a longstanding member of this community since 1946, and we have had the opportunity to perform for thousands of music enthusiasts at events including Harborfest, various central New York summer concerts and even Policeman’s Balls.”
Sterio started his career with his father’s, Carmello Sterio’s, band, while attending St. Paul’s Academy in Oswego at the age of 10. He later played in numerous bands while serving in the Air Force (formerly Air Corps). Now 85 years old, Sterio has been awarded a Citation of Excellence in 1990 by the National Band Association and plays regularly with his orchestra, the Liverpool Community Band and Baldwinsville Community Band.
His son David serves as the Master of Ceremonies during the orchestra’s performances.
“The Research Foundation of State University of New York at Oswego’s sponsorship has enabled RSVP to present folk, big band music and dance events each month to Oswego County,” said Ellen Wahl, director of RSVP. “The program was launched in 2006 with a grant received from the New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. A second, smaller grant, was awarded in 2007, with the intent to transition USOswego into a self-funded landmark tradition.”
RSVP is part of the Corporation for National and Community service, a network of federally sponsored programs that help Americans age 55 and older find opportunities to address community needs through service. The program is under the local sponsorship of the State University of New York College at Oswego and United Way of Greater Oswego County.
The Oswego RSVP office is located in Mackin Hall on the Oswego University campus. For more information, call RSVP at 312-2317.
