Oswego, N.Y. -

“Let him know, that he which converteth a sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” (James 5:20)

You know, they seem to have a month or a day designated to raise awareness for almost everything under the sun. I don’t think that is necessarily bad, mind you, as this does serve to raise awareness about important issues people might not be aware of.

For example, February is Heart Month and Friday was national “Wear Red Day” to promote awareness that heart disease is the number one killer among both men and women. Typically considered a “man’s” disease, the day was created to get the word out to women that it is also their number one cause of death. So, to that end, it is a good concept.

The others I tolerate are Valentine’s Day, grandparent’s day, mother’s day, etc. I say “tolerate” because I feel if you need to have one day a year set aside to express your love for someone like your mom, your spouse or your grandparent, perhaps you had better evaluate your priorities. I believe most of us, however,  do try to show our love and consideration all year, not just one day of year. Thus, it stands to reason the ones who truly benefit from these kind of holidays are the florists, jewelers and card companies. Perhaps I have a somewhat cynical view, but there it is.

I am actually referring to all this to make another point. If we should show our love to others throughout the year, rather than just once a year, shouldn’t it be the same in relationship to our Heavenly Father?

Is the only time we should really think about Him and pay Him homage Sunday? Or even worse, just Easter and Christmas? I honestly think the holidays serve more to publicize Santa and the Easter Bunny than the birth of Christ and the sacrifice that was made for our souls.

That is why we need to treat each day as a gift from God. If you think about it, every day is “children of God” day. Each breath we draw, each step we take is thanks to Him. Even if we don’t wake up one morning, we have the gift of eternal life from Him — if we chose to accept it.

So, as Christians, we should make every day “Get to know God” day or “Tell others about God” day. We need to raise awareness for those around us who do not know how much God loves every one of us. Or, that death does not mean the end. By sharing awareness, we are sharing the gift of hope and love. No card, no gift box, no wrapping paper or bows. Just the best gift of all.

God.

That is the real Gift that keeps on giving.
