Posted: Tuesday, April 9, 2013 4:00 am

Oswego Mayor Tom Gillen recently proclaimed today, April 9, a day of recognition for national service. On hand for the proclamation were local AmeriCorps members Dee Hall, Nicole Snyder, Rachel Verdoliva, Matthew McLaughlin, Rachel Lanphere, Carrie Victory, Peter Sterbak, Melissa Mc-Cleary and Kathy Andolina. Ellen Wahl, RSVP executive director, and Ellie Filburn, chair of the RSVP advisory council was also on hand. According to Gillen, the nation's mayors are turning to national service and volunteerism as a cost-effective strategy to meet city needs and AmeriCorps and Senior Corps help address the most pressing challenges facing cities and the nation. Participants currently serve in more than 70,000 locations across the country.
