For the second time in three months, a Fulton woman was arrested for allegedly taking money for her employers that did not belong to her.
Wednesday, Oswego County Sheriff Deputies arrested Karen S. Goppert, 37, of Senior Avenue. Goppert is accused of stealing more than $4,300 from Fox Hollow Movers of Oswego Town. She was charged with two counts of forgery in the second degree, class-D felonies and grand larceny in the third degree, class-D felony.
According to Undersheriff Bob Lighthall, Fox Hollow Movers discovered the first check Tuesday. The check was written for $2,303.75. “She offered to refund them the money,” Lighthall said. “Karen returned their money to them in front of the deputy.”
The company was not planning on pressing charges against Goppert if they did not find any more checks, Lighthall said. Wednesday the moving company found another check Goppert had allegedly written, this time for $2,000. Fox Hollow contacted the Sheriff’s department that day and had Goppert arrested.
“She processed the checks for her own business, KLG Transport Inc.,” Lighthall said, noting he did not know what the business was.
According to the undersheriff, Goppert did not provide a reason as to why she allegedly stole the money. “The only thing she said was she made a mistake in not asking first,” Lighthall said.
Goppert was first arrested May 8 for allegedly stealing various checks and cash from her former employer, Nissan North, Lt. Jeff Kinney of the Fulton Police Department said. She was charged with grand larceny in the third degree, a class-D felony.
According to Kinney, Goppert allegedly deposited $8,725.50 belonging to Nissan North into her own bank account. She then paid her employer back Feb. 5. It is also alleged that Feb. 1 Goppert made another deposit of various checks and cash from Nissan North into her own bank account for $18,936.
Wednesday, Goppert was arraigned in Oswego Town Court and remanded to the Oswego County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,500 cash or $2,500 bond. According to Lighthall, Goppert made bail on $2,500 bond Thursday afternoon. She is slated to appear in Oswego Town court Monday.
