VOLNEY, N.Y. -

The North Volney Church will honor their longest active member Sunday from 2-4 p.m.
Florence Stevens has been going to the church for many years and continues to attend the church once a week.

Stevens has also helped with activities at the church for many years. Her years of service included being a Sunday School teacher, trustee of the church, working on various committees, cleaning, sweeping, moping, waxing church floors, mowing the lawn, painting, donating food items, cooking and cleaning up at church suppers and events.

According to Florence McDougall, daughter of Stevens, her mom and dad, Jack Stevens, ran the rural store and gas station at the corner of county routes 4 and 6.

“The store was right across the street from the church, so my mom would walk over to clean while my dad ran the shop,” McDougall said. “Since God is her focal point in life, it meant a lot to her to help out at the church.”

Stevens would also collect newspapers for the church and take them to wherever was paying the highest price for them. She also found time to visit the shut-ins, often driving many to doctor appointments. Stevens even found the time to teach many young people how to drive a car and kept the cemetery mowed.

She also drove many college students and servicemen to catch a bus or train.

Stevens raised three girls and one boy who also attended the church every Sunday.
“I remember helping at the store more when I was younger,” McDougall said. “Now my sisters and I try to help out at the church whenever we can.”

When she wasn’t helping at the church, McDougall said her mom would write letters to or call everyone she knew. Her dad called it a cheap hobby.

There will be a short church service to honor Stevens. An open house will take place after to greet Stevens and wish her well. Memories will be shared with Stevens and many will have the chance to talk with her. Refreshments including a special cake, ice cream and beverages will be available.

In recognition of her long and distinguished career in the community and church, an invitation to all her past customers, neighbors, relatives and friends is extended.

“All are welcome,” McDougall said. “You can even bring a friend.”
