Former Oswego resident Winfred G. “Mike” Michel passed away April 29, 2008, in Gulfport, Fla. after a short illness.
A veteran of World War II, Mike landed troops at the battles of Iwo Jima, the Marshall Islands and Leyte Gulf while a member of the U.S. Coast Guard.
While in Oswego, he worked for the Erie Lackawanna and Conrail railroads and was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish where he served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 52.
He and his wife had subsequently retired to Florida, where he remained active in scouting.
He leaves to mourn him his beloved wife of 60 years, Nancy Michel; his son, Anthony (Martine) Michel of Septemes, France; his daughters, Cathy (Terry) Schwartz of Gulfport, Janet (Kevin) McNamara of St. Petersburg, Fla., Patricia (Nat) Michel-Siembor of Oswego, Mary Meeks of Port Richey, Fla. and Diane (Steven) Hallmark of Houston, Texas; along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at Most Holy Name of Jesus Church in Gulfport on Monday.
