To the Oswego Community,
On April 1, 2008, the City of Oswego citizens and its business community meet one of its greatest challenges — surviving the economic impact of the closing of the Route 104 Bridge — the OSWEGO BRIDGE CHALLENGE!
I call upon all of us, as Oswegonians, to “SHOP OSWEGO FIRST.” Find ways to buy what you need here in Oswego. Entertain your friends at our local restaurants. Plan to eat lunch and shop on your lunch hour.
We have many new shops and services downtown and in our shopping corridor. Before you buy on-line or go to Syracuse, give Oswego businesses a “first shot,” especially this year during Oswego’s Bridge Challenge. Supporting Oswego businesses saves on gas and time. Buying in Oswego keeps tax dollars in our community — both sales tax revenue and property taxes.
Our Oswego businesses are the ones that contribute to our hospital, churches and schools, youth groups and local community programs. Local businesses contribute more to our local economy by providing jobs and living wages to our residents.
Supporting our local businesses, especially downtown, creates the vibrant business climate that encourages more investment and future growth for our community.
In anticipation of the bridge closure, I would like to announce the opening of the Harbor Rail Trail on Monday, March 24, 2008 (weather permitting). I encourage all Oswegonians to get more exercise during 2008 — walk or cycle to your destinations in Oswego. Save gas, reduce your carbon footprint and make Oswego the best place to live, work and play in upstate New York!
