Oswego, N.Y. -

Fayetteville’s Charlie Krylo sailed his J/24 “Seaweed” to the overall championship Saturday in the ninth annual Oswego County Hospice Cup Regatta.

Constellation Energy was the major sponsor of the event, which was held on Lake Ontario off Oswego Harbor.

“Seaweed” used consistent finishes in all three races to win the title, and a berth in the 2009 Hospice Cup Regatta National Championship in Annapolis, Md.

Krylo skippered “Seaweed” to third-place overall finishes in the first two races, then a first-place overall finish in the third race. That gave “Seaweed” a total of seven points (adding up the three race finishes) for the regatta.

“Mystery,” sailed by Oswego’s Tom Doran, took second place overall with a score of 12. “Mystery” won the first race, but placed ninth overall in the Race 2 before rebounding with a second-place overall finish in Race 3.

Completing the top five overall finishers were “Significant Other,” a J/24 sailed by Russ Cook of Baldwinsville; the 2007 regatta winner “Hiawatha,” sailed by Auburn’s Bob Porter; and “Blaze,” sailed by Red Creek’s Brendan Benson.

“Hiawatha” was in the overall leader after placing second and first in the first two races of the regatta, but a 14th place in Race 3 dropped it to fourth in the final overall standings.

Eighteen boats were raced in the regatta.

The Comerford-VanDrake Sportsmanship Award was presented to Dick and Kathy White.

Competition also occurred among similar boats within divisions. The winners were “Mystery” in Division 1; “Just Right,” sailed by J.R. Riggs, in Division 2; “Seaweed” in Division 3; Mike Coffey on “Coffey Break” in Division 4; and “Tanz,” sailed by an all-female crew out of Sodus Bay, in Division 5.

Walk/Run for Hope results

The regatta’s companion event, the Walk/Run for Hope, was also held on Saturday, starting and finishing near the Oswego Yacht Club.

The distance was 3.72 miles.

Jake McAndrew, the former Oswego High School cross country and track standout, won the run with a time of 19:10. McAndrew just completed his sophomore year at Le Moyne College. With the Le Moyne cross country team, he earned Northeast-10 Conference All-Academic First-Team honors, and made the NCAA Division II All-Region Team. He finished 13th at the NCAA Regionals.

Completing the top five overall finishers in the run were Jim Vandish (26:28), Zach McQuaid (26:38), Mexico’s Deb Smith (27:11), and Pennellville’s Gary Daniels (27:32).

Rounding out the top 10 were Cicero’s Kevin Brisson (28:08), Oswego’s Ernie Mears (28:32), Mannsville’s Keith Ridgeway (28:45), Oswego’s Sandy Mustico (29:05), and East Syracuse’s Chris Kobos (29:14).

Oswego’s Bill Fatiga won the walk event in 40:19, followed by Sally Daniels (43:23), and Kathy Pilon (46:34).

There were 45 participants in the Walk/Run for Hope.

Last year’s regatta events raised more than $20,000 to support Oswego County Hospice patients and their families.

Debbie Bishop, executive director of the Friends of Oswego County Hospice, said Saturday’s events went well.

“We should be very close to what we raised last year,” Bishop said. “Everything went great. The breeze was good for the races, and the walk/run went well. We had more volunteers helping out than we’ve ever had.”

NRG Energy, Pathfinder Bank, Entergy Nuclear, and Alliance Bank were also among this year’s sponsors.
