Mexico, N.Y. -

The Mexico varsity girls lacrosse team showed improvement, but still lost to visiting East Syracuse-Minoa 11-4 on Thursday at Mexico High School.

Laura Matthews scored four goals to lead the Spartans (7-6), who are ranked 16th in the state in Class B. Gina Campese added three goals for ESM. Goalie Carissa Ficarro was very effective, stopping 10 shots.

The Tigers (3-11), in their first year of varsity lacrosse, showed progress from a 15-1 loss at ESM earlier this season. The Spartans tallied the first seven goals of the game, but it was a 4-4 contest the rest of the way.

Sophomore Stevie Lombardoni netted two goals for Mexico. Also scoring goals were senior Kayla Lombardoni and sophomore Jessica Hayes. Goalie Cassie Delong finished with 12 saves, and the Tiger defense was strong in front of her.

Prior to the game, Mexico paid tribute to its two seniors on Senior Night. Kayla Lombardoni and Hannah Akley were honored for their contributions to the program.
