Oswego, N.Y. -

Oswego State baseball coach Frank Paino was released from the hospital Friday after an injury suffered during a game Thursday afternoon in Rochester, according to Oswego State sports information.

Paino was coaching third base for the Lakers in the top of the ninth inning when a batted ball lined down the left side struck him in the head.

Paino was held overnight for observation at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was released from the hospital Friday afternoon.

The Lakers defeated St. John Fisher 9-5. The game was halted after Paino was struck.
Paino is in his 22nd year as head coach of the Lakers and has more than 400 wins in his career.

Friday’s games in the ECAC Upstate Tournament were postponed for one day, and the tournament will be played Saturday and Sunday on two diamonds, allowing for the completion of the entire double-elimination bracket.

Oswego State (15-11) opens tournament play at 10 a.m. Saturday against top-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology at Damaschke Field in Oneonta, the home stadium for the Oneonta Tigers of the New York-Penn League.

The other first-round game matches SUNY Athletic Conference members Oneonta and Brockport, at SUNY Oneonta’s field.

In the win over St. John Fisher, the Lakers scored seven runs in the eighth inning to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 9-5 lead. Oswego State had seven hits in the inning. The rally started with a triple by Mike Levy, an RBI single by Brett Shaffer, and an RBI double by Dan Pecora. Another big blow in the rally was a three-run double by Levy later in the inning.

Oswego State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on sacrifice flies by Josh Stoetzel and Levy.

The Cardinals tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first with two runs on three walks and a two-run single by Marc Montesano.

Fisher took a three-run lead in the second on five hits, including RBI singles by John Quartironi and Jason Nevada, and a sacrifice fly by Dave Roth.

Laker starting pitcher P.J. Cowie lasted just two innings. Andy Salvatore earned the win in relief with six shutout innings. He allowed four hits, walked four, and struck out four.

Levy was 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead Oswego State’s 15-hit attack.
