Oswego, N.Y. -

Sophomore Lauren Corradino tried to keep thoughts of a no-hitter out of her mind during Tuesday’s varsity softball game against Baldwinsville.

“I tried not to think about it because I might mess up,” she said.

But Corradino was nearly perfect in pitching her first varsity no-hitter, leading Oswego to a key 3-0 league victory.

“It feels great,” she said. “I felt good pitching and throwing strikes. My defense has always got me back there. I have to trust my defense.”

The Oswego glove crew was flawless throughout, mostly on routine plays. Oswego third baseman Mandy Ranous, who had three assists, made a nice stab of a sharply hit one-hopper off the bat of Jill Conicella in the seventh. That was perhaps the hardest-hit ball by the Bees.

Corradino struck out the final two batters to complete her gem.

Working well with senior catcher Emily Oleyourryk, Corradino spotted her pitches well and mixed in an occasional change-up to keep the Bees off balance. She finished with 10 strikeouts.

The only Baldwinsville baserunner was Conicella, who walked on a 3-2 pitch in the fourth inning.

Oswego coach Mike McCrobie praised the pitching of Corradino and the team’s fielding as well.

“They toughened up the defense and played very well behind her,” McCrobie said.

Offensively, the Bucs scored all their runs in the first inning. With one out, Sara Molinari, Oleyourryk, and Corradino all singled. Marissa Canale then hammered a pitch to the left-center gap for a double, plating all three runners.

“We need timely hits when we’re in games like this,” McCrobie said.

The only other Buccaneer safeties were a pair of singles by the hot-hitting Oleyourryk, who appears to be peaking at the right time of the season.

“Right now, she’s hitting the ball as well as she ever has,” McCrobie said. “That’s good to see. She’s a fourth-year varsity player.”

Baldwinsville’s Anna Hammill blanked Oswego after the first inning. She went the distance, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out five.

Oswego improved to 14-7 overall this season.

The Bees dropped to 6-10.

McCrobie said he likes the way his club is playing right now. “Every day, somebody else does something positive and contributes, and that’s great for a coach,” he said.

Oswego hosted powerhouse Cicero-North Syracuse on Wednesday, and will welcome Corcoran at 5 p.m. Thursday on Senior Day.
