Oswego, N.Y. -

After spotting visiting Corcoran four first-inning runs, the Oswego varsity softball team stormed back to get a 14-4 victory Thursday on Senior Day.

Honored in ceremonies prior to the game were Buccaneer seniors Sarah Petrie, Emily Oleyourryk, Lexi Deming, and Mandy Ranous. Also recognized were Joan and Butch Gallagher, presented with the Fans of the Year Award in memory of Gerry “G.T.” Brown.

The Cougars then made a bid to spoil the festivities. Their first-inning outburst was aided by two Oswego errors. Diamond Brown and Sierra McMahon drilled RBI singles, and Sara Harrington’s squeeze bunt also plated a run.

“Traditionally on a day of ceremony, there’s some emotion and lack of focus, but we certainly didn’t expect to be down four runs before the dust even settled,” Oswego coach Mike McCrobie said. “If the kids learned a lesson from that, it might be able to help the team in the remaining game, the sectionals, or next year.”

Oswego answered quickly, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Five Cougar errors contributed to the rally. Sara Molinari and Oleyourryk reached on errors, and Marissa Canale belted a two-run double down the left-field line. Lauren Corradino and Morgan Lavner later nailed RBI singles.

Corradino’s RBI single in the second inning made it 6-4, then Oswego cemented the advantage with a six-run fourth. Key hits in that uprising were RBI safeties by Oleyourryk and Petrie. Two errors and two walks also played a part in the rally.

Oswego plated its final two runs in the sixth inning. Lauren Corradino tripled and scored on Petrie’s double. Petrie later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ranous to make it 14-4.

Corradino finished with two singles, a triple, and three RBIs. Marissa Canale doubled, singled twice, and knocked in two runs. Petrie and Lavner had two hits each, and Oleyourryk had an RBI single.

Corradino allowed just one hit after the first inning. In her six innings of work, she struck out 10. Laura Miceli pitched a perfect seventh, striking out two.

Oswego, 15-8, will play a non-league night game at Auburn on Monday to conclude the regular season.

After the game, McCrobie reflected on the contributions of his seniors over their softball careers.

“They’ve come to summer camps and clinics since they were 7 or 8 years old,” he said. “They’re not Division I caliber athletes, but I wouldn’t trade them for a whole team of Division I players. They do anything that I ask of them on the field.”

McCrobie said the Section III playoff seedings would be announced late next week. He said he expects the Bucs to draw around a No. 5 seed for the Class AA playoffs.
