St. Paul’s UBC boys basketball team crushes competition at Hoosier Classic

The St. Paul’s United Basketball Coaches 16-and-under AAU boys team traveled to Oneonta this past weekend and won the annual Oneonta Hoosier Classic tournament, held at the Oneonta Boys & Girls Club.

The team is coached by Mike Porter and Bob Connelly from Oswego. St. Paul’s UBC is now 23-2 on the AAU season.

The Oneonta Hoosier Classic was the team’s fourth championship of the season. St. Paul’s UBC also took titles at the Cortland Shootout, the Buffalo Storm, and the Binghamton Run and Gun.

UBC hosts a tournament in Oswego on Friday and Saturday.

At the Hoosier Classic, St. Paul’s UBC dominated the action in all four of its games.
St. Paul’s UBC 75, Walton 22: In the opening game UBC opened up an 11-0 lead and never looked back, playing spirited basketball against an overmatched Walton team.
Will Fiacchi led a balanced attack with 18 points, followed by Tyler Ross with 15, Zach Firestone with 13, and Steve Raven with 10.

Tyler Hunt and Nikko Wagner grabbed seven rebounds each.

It was the high-energy play and relentless pressure of Ross and Mac Porter that set the tone early and resulted in eight steals and 11 assists for the two players. Porter finished with eight assists against one turnover while handling the play-making chores.

St. Paul’s UBC 66, Oneida Savings Bank 30: UBC’s full-court pressure was simply too much for the Oneida team, which was held to 18 first-half points while allowing St. Paul’s to pile up 47.

Fiacchi, Ross, and Raven led the scoring and finished with 17, 16, and 13 points, respectively. Raven also hauled down 12 rebounds, while Porter dished out eight assists.

Hunt came off the bench to score six points and pull down five rebounds.

St. Paul’s UBC 68, Waverly Red Wave 36: UBC came out ready to play and held the local Waverly team to 15 first-half points while they scored 39. Defense was again the key as all nine UBC players maintained the pressure.

Firestone tallied 18 points and five rebounds, while Ross had 11 points and six boards. All the UBC players scored.

St. Paul’s UBC 66, STNY Flyers 42: In the final game, UBC faced an undefeated Flyers team which seem determined to make it a game. UBC came out scorching the nets to an 11-0 lead and stayed in control.

Fiacchi’s presence on defense was tremendous as he turned the early tide of the game with six first-half steals. He finished with 10 rebounds and 12 points.

Firestone tossed in 28 points, connecting on 7-for-8 from 3-point range. Many of his buckets were the result of some fine passing from Porter and Fiacchi, who combined for 11 assists, eight and three, respectively.
